Ultimate Off-Road Crossover Showdown: Honda Passport TrailSport vs Subaru Outback Wilderness vs Hyundai Santa Fe XRT

The modern automotive landscape has experienced a monumental shift toward adventure-ready unibody crossovers. For American buyers seeking the aesthetic and functional benefits of rugged vehicles without sacrificing daily comfort, the market offers compelling choices. Vehicles like the Subaru Outback Wilderness, Honda Passport TrailSport, and Hyundai Santa Fe XRT blend body cladding, lifted suspensions, and all-terrain traction into versatile packages. As an automotive journalist with a decade of testing experience, I wanted to see how these adventure-ready trim levels handle real-world challenges when the pavement ends.

To evaluate their true potential, we took this trio of rugged crossovers deep into Pennsylvania’s challenging terrain, testing their limits on highway commutes and uneven dirt tracks alike.

The Contenders

2026 Subaru Outback Wilderness
Subaru has long mastered all-wheel-drive utility, and its Wilderness lineup aims directly at the overlanding boom. The Outback Wilderness features increased ground clearance, durable cladding, and aggressive all-terrain tires wrapped around 17-inch wheels. Powered by a turbocharged 2.4-liter flat-four engine producing 260 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque, it utilizes a simulated eight-speed CVT and Subaru’s proprietary X-Mode torque-vectoring system.

2026 Honda Passport TrailSport Elite
Honda’s mid-size two-row SUV boasts a squared-off, muscular posture. The TrailSport trim introduces 8.3 inches of ground clearance, 18-inch wheels with General Grabber all-terrain tires, revised all-wheel drive, and heavy-duty steel underbody skid plates. Motivation comes from a naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V-6 delivering 285 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque, mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission.

2026 Hyundai Santa Fe XRT
Hyundai’s boxy, three-row family hauler pushes into non-traditional territory with the XRT trim. It offers 8.3 inches of ground clearance, specialized terrain modes, and Continental TerrainContact tires on 18-inch wheels. Its turbocharged 2.5-inline-four engine churns out 277 horsepower and 311 lb-ft of torque—the highest torque output in our test group—coupled with a traditional eight-speed torque-converter automatic transmission.

On the Road Performance

Daily driving comfort remains critical for these soft-roaders. Despite rugged exterior modifications, all three competitors maintain impressive highway manners, avoiding the harsh ride or excessive wind noise typical of body-on-frame SUVs.

The Hyundai Santa Fe XRT shines on pavement due to its lighter off-road hardware. Pulling away from heavy traffic, the 4,400-pound three-row crossover feels remarkably agile. Its electric power-steering and throttle inputs require minimal effort, and the cabin remains remarkably serene. While its driving character is predictable and straightforward, long highway stretches pass effortlessly.

The Subaru Outback Wilderness feels energetic and nimble, capitalizing on its lighter curb weight of 3,973 pounds. Its lifted suspension introduces slightly more body movement over highway undulations compared to its rivals, but maneuverability at lower speeds is exceptional. The turbocharged flat-four delivers strong acceleration once the boost builds, though initial throttle response faces slight delays through the CVT.

The Honda Passport TrailSport relies on displacement rather than forced induction. Its naturally aspirated V-6 sounds refined as it climbs toward its peak horsepower output. Paired with a responsive 10-speed automatic transmission, the Passport offers steady highway stability and quick low-rev response in urban environments. Weighing 4,700 pounds, it feels substantial, planted, and reassuringly stable at high speeds.

Off-Road Testing and Capability

None of these crossovers feature mechanical locking differentials or low-range transfer cases. Instead, they rely on electronic torque-distribution clutches and brake-based traction management.

Navigating the rugged trails of the Anthracite Outdoor Adventure Area highlighted their mechanical limits. The Subaru Outback Wilderness boasts a class-leading 9.5 inches of ground clearance, allowing it to easily clear obstacles that forced contact with the others. Its short wheelbase minimized underbody scrapes.

The Honda Passport TrailSport utilizes 8.3 inches of clearance and robust steel underbody skid plates. While its longer wheelbase occasionally resulted in minor scrapes over sharp ridges, the thick steel protection absorbed impacts without structural issue.

The Hyundai Santa Fe XRT struggled most in severe off-road environments. Its 8.3 inches of clearance and limited protective underbody cladding left vulnerable components exposed, and its all-wheel-drive system occasionally hesitated when power distribution was abruptly needed on steep inclines.

During hill-climb evaluations, the Passport TrailSport excelled with its class-leading approach angle and rapid i-VTM4 torque-vectoring response. The Santa Fe XRT managed the climb competently after initial hesitation from its H-Trac system. The Outback Wilderness faced temporary traction-control hesitation on steep articulation tests before routing power effectively to clear the obstacle.

Interior Comfort and Technology

Inside the cabin, technology and refinement take center stage. The Subaru Outback Wilderness features a clean layout centered around a 12.1-inch horizontal touchscreen, comfortable StarTex seating, and traditional physical climate controls.

The Hyundai Santa Fe XRT feels upscale, featuring a seamless 12.3-inch infotainment display, generous second- and third-row space, and abundant USB-C charging ports throughout the cabin.

The Honda Passport TrailSport Elite offers a premium environment equipped with perforated leather seating, a 12.3-inch touchscreen, and a 12-speaker Bose audio system. While its button-style shifter takes adjustment, its quiet cabin ambiance matches luxury vehicle standards.

Value and Pricing

Value varies significantly across the board. The Hyundai Santa Fe XRT presents an exceptionally competitive entry point, priced thousands below its rivals while offering comprehensive standard equipment. The Subaru Outback Wilderness provides strong value in base configuration, though adding upgraded displays and premium materials increases the overall cost. The Honda Passport TrailSport Elite sits at the higher end of the spectrum, reflecting its luxury-grade features, winter amenities, and robust mechanical build.

And the Winner Is…

Choosing among these adventure-styled crossovers depends on whether buyers prioritize rugged styling or genuine capability. While the Subaru excels in ground clearance and the Hyundai offers unmatched space and value, the Honda Passport TrailSport emerges as the overall champion.

The Passport delivers an uncompromised blend of refined highway manners and dependable off-road composure. Its intelligent powertrain, robust underbody protection, and confident driving dynamics ensure it handles demanding terrain with ease. If you are ready to elevate your weekend adventures with a reliable, capable mid-size SUV, visit your local dealer today to test-drive the Honda Passport TrailSport and experience its unmatched versatility firsthand.
