Francis Ngannou’s coach Dewey Cooper has advised Jake Paul against fighting the former UFC heavyweight champion.

Paul was scheduled to make his return to the ring next week against Gervonta Davis, but was forced to cancel the showcase after ‘Tank’ faced allegations of battery, false imprisonment and kidnapping from a former girlfriend.

The ‘Problem Child’ has not fought since defeating former middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr back in June, but is hoping for at least one more fight this year. After cancelling his clash with Davis, Paul has since called out the likes of Terence Crawford, Anthony Joshua, Nate Diaz and Ngannou.

Cooper believes Ngannou is a ‘dangerous fight’ for Paul’s health and has urged the American to stay away. He told New Betting Sites: “Jake Paul had a fight lined up with a much smaller guy, one of the most popular names in boxing, and it got cancelled. What would a master marketer do at that point? Of course you’re going to call out the biggest names in the sport; Francis Ngannou, Ryan Garcia, Terence Crawford, Anthony Joshua. You’re picking the most popular names in all of fight sports.

“Do you truly think that if someone called Francis Ngannou with a feasible offer to make a fight happen, the contract wouldn’t already be signed? I think it’s a marketing ploy to keep people interested because the fight is eleven days away. He has to throw big names out there to keep interest. But none of those stars, if they really had an offer, would be quiet. I’m sure they’d all take him up on it.

“I haven’t even talked to him about that fight because, in my mind, it’s kind of ridiculous. The fight’s eleven days away and not many people want to fight Francis Ngannou on short notice. And I don’t think Jake truly wants to fight him, that’s a huge mountain to climb. I’ve seen Jake train; he’s better than people think. But to fight Francis Ngannou is a very dangerous fight for his health. I wouldn’t want to see him get hurt like that.”

Issuing a challenge to Ngannou earlier this week, Paul wrote on social media: “Dear Francis – just say you already got humiliated in boxing and are scared to lose to Jake Paul. I accept that. You are light work my friend. Stuck in mud.” Ngannou responded by writing: “Choose your words wisely boy. I agree that you need someone to discipline you for what you did to Mike Tyson, but stay in your lane.”

Paul continued: “My lane helped your lane. I spoke up for you over and over again. No more. Look at yourself in the mirror. God don’t like ugly. Maybe the truth is you are a fake holier than thou actor, when it’s always been just about you. Maybe use your platform to speak on the youth of your country (posting a flag ain’t it), instead of doing TMZ interviews like a con man to talk about me. Reality check…I sleep you in boxing and Jon Jones does in [MMA].” Ngannou concluded: “You did speak up for me in the past, but we are still not in the same lane. Grow up and don’t fall so low.”

Ngannou has not fought inside the boxing since his crushing knockout defeat to Anthony Joshua in March 2024, but has hinted at a return to the squared-circle in the near future.
